Counseling and therapy have been unfortunately misconceived in our culture as interventions reserved for individuals suffering from mental illness. Though talk-therapy has been proven to be highly effective in treating mental health disorders, it is also a powerful tool that all individuals can use to build stress-management plans, manage anxiety and mood related concerns, as well as maintain a positive self-image, work through relationship conflicts, and serve as a preventative method to maintain positive mental health.
As time continues, we are finding ourselves more stressed than ever before! According to the American Psychological Association (2020), “nearly 1 in 5 American adults say that their mental health has declined since last year.” Stress affects our mood, our immune systems, our relationships, our behaviors, etc. We are finding our children’s mental health being more and more compromised each year as expectations continuously increase for success in school, sports, and social environments.
Designing and maintaining a self-care plan is proving to provide enormous support in combating the effects of stress in our daily lives. Just as we understand the importance of daily exercise habits, nutritional habits, and sleep to support our overall health, we are realizing having a mental health plan in place completes that full circle of health to support a long, vibrant life!
